The recent post about the new R2-D2 USB cleaner got me thinking about all the useful, fun and sometimes impractical USB accessories available for sci-fi and fantasy fanatics. Some, like USB flash drives and hubs, are very practical. Others, like the USB light-up Alien, certainly fall into the fun spectrum. I’ve put together a list of many of the different USB gadgets I found across the web and where to buy them.
The world may not be ready for this, but Taito is bringing a USB-powered cleaner to desktops in the form of R2-D2. Powerful enough to pick up little bits of dirt, dust, and small paper from your desk, but not much else, the nearly 4-inch droid may be only slight less practical than the USB humidifier. Available for pre-order from NCSX, the retail price is about $21. The R2-D2 cleaner is set to ship in August.

Winter got you feeling a little dry and unhappy? Perhaps the R2-D2 USB humidifier will help moisten and brighten your day. We mentioned this little gadget a few months ago, and now ThinkGeek is offering the trusty droid for about $20. The USB-powered desktop humidifier holds just a few ounces of water, so this won’t fill the whole house or office. But hey, why would you want to share? Pop his top, add water, plug him into your computer, and enjoy the misty goodness.
Available from ThinkGeek and other retailers. Retail price $19.99
Whether you have a thing for bobble heads or short droids with attitude, the new R2-D2 Bobble Head from Entertainment Earth may be just the droid you’re looking for. This 7-inch figure is scheduled for release in December 2009.
Yet one more product to add to the expanding assortment of R2-D2 merchandise available from the Star Wars universe.
If bobble heads and Star Wars really get you going, you may also want to check out the other bobble head figures at Entertainment Earth, including some bobbles ready for the holidays.

As I was browsing the web today, I kept coming across R2-D2 merchandise, like this desktop USB hub. Out of curiosity, I set out to see how many different ways the likeness of the spunky little robot has been used to create collectibles and kitsch, beyond just the action figures.
Over the course of an hour I found over two-dozen products, ranging from wacky to way cool. It is a bit sad to see the depths to which our noble, metal hero has sunk, though. I mean really, a tissue dispenser and soy sauce bottle?! R2 deserves so much better.
