Couple of quick bits in the world of sci-fi movies on DVD and Blu-ray. James Cameron’s Avatar hits store shelves this Thursday, April 22, on Blu-ray and DVD in the U.S. and Canada. This initial release, timed to coincide with Earth Day, will include just the theatrical 2D version of the film without any on-disc special features. Come November, expect additional releases with the extras, bonus features, etc. For those that want a copy before the fall, the movie is available for pre-order from Amazon.com
and other retailers; suggested retail price is about $40 (Blu-ray).
Star Wars on Blu-ray?
In other news, fresh rumors of an upcoming Star Wars release on Blu-ray came from the C2E2 comic book convention in Chicago this last weekend. According to IGN, Steve Sansweet, Director of Fan Relations for Lucasfilm, said that a set of all six Star Wars movies on hi-def Blu-ray is in the works, but provided no specifics as to when it will be available. As quoted by IGN:
We have been at work for a couple of years working on—I won’t call it the Ultimate Set because we keep finding stuff—but, a very full set of all six movies on Blu-ray with lots of extra material. We’re finding all kinds of scenes from dailies that have never been seen before. Beyond all of those things that you know about… there are some real treasures.”
As details unfold, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Moon
Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell), alone with the moon base’s watchful computer Gerty (voiced by Kevin Spacey), is close to finishing his 3-year contract with Lunar Industries when seeming disaster strikes. More of a drama than a traditional sci-fi action flick, director Duncan Jones tackles the psychological impact of isolation, along with a few additional twists, in this low-budget film.

James Cameron’s film Avatar opens here in the US on Friday, December 18th (showtime/tickets), and so far the initial reviews are pretty good. Avatar is the story of a wounded ex-marine, Jake Sully, pushed into a growing conflict between human settlement expansion/ exploitation of an exotic planet called Pandora and the native Na’vi. As an Avatar, a human mind in an alien body, Jake ultimately finds himself in a desperate fight for the survival of the indigenous people.
The hype and expectations are pretty high for this movie, and with a big blockbuster science fiction film comes blockbuster merchandising. Here are some of the products and collectibles out now or coming soon.
